From simple to scalable: BOI FreeDa vs. Microsoft Access

MS Access is considered a simple tool for data management — but how practical is this approach when dealing with large data volumes, and where do the risks lie? In Part 3 of our comparison series, we examine its strengths and weaknesses in a direct comparison with BOI FreeDa.

Many companies face the challenge of managing their critical data — such as master, reference, or parameter data — efficiently and securely, and often rely on MS Access to do so.

The database and development tool from the Microsoft Office 365 suite offers an easy entry point: tables, forms, and reports can be created quickly, often without additional licensing costs. This is a clear advantage, especially for smaller use cases.

However, as requirements grow, limitations become apparent: lack of scalability, integration constraints, decentralized data storage, and a lack of audit trail.

In the third part of our series, we compare MS Access with BOI FreeDa and highlight use cases where a simple solution is sufficient  — and when BOI FreeDa is the better choice for more complex data requirements.
